Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Or a Taeguk Azure and gray (the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 29th Division), between four fleurs-de-lis in cross Vert.  Attached above the shield from a wreath Or and Azure a lion's head erased Or collared four fusils Gules.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "STRENGTH IN STEEL" in Black letters.

Symbolism
Yellow is for Armor.  The shoulder sleeve insignia of the 29th Division indicates service during World War I.  The fleurs-de-lis refer to the organization's four European battle honors of World War II.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 252d Tank Battalion on 18 July 1956.  It was redesignated for the 53d Armor Regiment and amended to include the state crest on 5 June 1961.
